Gustavo Torres Powers Fervo Energy Through a Landmark Year

When Hispanic Executive spoke with Gustavo Torres a little over a year ago, the question was asked: What would motivate an attorney who could do practically anything in the energy space to take a chance on a fledgling alternative energy company?

The last year has answered that question in headlines, awards, and New York Times write-ups. In just over a year, Torres helped lead Fervo Energy through a successful IPO, Wall Street’s largest clean tech IPO to date, with an implied initial valuation of roughly $7.4 billion. The SVP, general counsel, and now corporate secretary was named “Attorney of the Year” by the Hispanic National Bar Association. And he helped Fervo complete the first-ever project financing for enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), along with the world’s largest EGS power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google, a company that needs no introduction.

All of this in one year. Torres says getting to the IPO in May was his main focus for a good chunk of last year and early 2026.

“An IPO has been a lifelong goal for me,” Torres says. “I’ve spent most of my career on the private side of things, and this is a rare opportunity for anybody. I’m so excited that I got the chance to go through it. It was an amazing learning experience, and surreal in a lot of ways.”

Even after the Fervo team pressed the button to ring the bell on the Nasdaq floor, Torres says the reality hadn’t quite hit him yet. He was surrounded by his wife and teenage children, who were able to come along for the event and who saw their own images blown up on billboards in Times Square, but it still didn’t register.

“It didn’t really settle in until we got back from New York,” the SVP says. “That was when I got to reflect on what an amazing experience it was for me, my family, our company, and this last year.”

Torres says that moment didn’t last long. Fervo’s first filing as a public company was due 45 days after the IPO. No time for victory laps. The attorney says that no matter how prepared he felt, the cadence of the filing cycles still surprised him. Every time one is completed, it’s immediately time to get to work on the next one.

“But it’s not just me going through this process,” Torres explains. “We had excellent advisers—people, firms, and accountants who were able to help us walk through those first few filings with a little help. We’re grateful to them for their advice.”

There’s been a lot of change in a very short window. Torres says there’s much more judgment required in public filings, press releases, and other external communications. It’s an area where he has purposefully focused on developing his skills as an officer of a public company.

An IPO is a landmark moment for any company, but Fervo has kept pressing forward at an incredible rate.

The morning of Torres’ interview, Fervo was awarded two grants totaling about $20 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to “accelerate the development of enhanced geothermal systems in Idaho and Nevada.” That includes exploratory drilling to prove the company’s capabilities and resources.

At the beginning of September, Fervo also announced a 396-megawatt PPA with Google that is expected to come online in 2028. Google will purchase carbon-free energy designed to serve as a pillar of a potential data center in Utah.

“This agreement reinforces that EGS is ready to power the next generation of computing infrastructure,” said Tim Latimer, CEO and co-founder of Fervo Energy, in a prepared statement.

If that’s not enough news, Fervo also threw in a move. The new Fervo Energy offices in Houston made Office Snapshots and seem poised to support the kind of growth that can handle so many massive deals over the course of a year.

Through all of this, Torres says he’s incredibly proud of how his team has stepped up to meet the moment.

“The people on my team, especially the legal team, have taken on so much more responsibility,” Torres says. “They’ve grown so much and learned to make particularly tough calls on their own. I’ve been a player-coach for so much of my career; they’ve allowed me to focus more on the big picture of being a leader at a public company.”

Along with being named HNBA’s “Attorney of the Year,” Torres was named a 2026 winner of the Texas General Counsel Forum’s Magna Stella Award. The attorney is humbled by and grateful for the attention he’s garnered this year, attention he’s never sought out in his career.

“I just hope I can look back and know that I was able to be a sherpa for another attorney trying to climb their own Everest,” Torres says. “I am a reflection of all the people who helped me have a year like 2026, and I just want to be able to be that for the next generation of attorneys around me.”

Congratulations to Gus Torres and Fervo Energy on the company’s landmark IPO. As Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary, Gus played a key role in establishing the legal and governance infrastructure that supported this milestone, building Fervo’s legal department from the ground up all while developing a diverse, high-performing team. Beyond his impressive contributions for Fervo, Gus serves as President-Elect of the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston where he actively works to expand opportunities for Hispanic attorneys. Yetter Coleman is proud to celebrate a visionary leader whose professional success is matched by his dedication to lifting others.
