Growing up, Monica Serrano Quintero never saw people like herself represented on television in an accurate way. That’s part of the motivation behind her work promoting diversity within CNN, where she started off as an intern and now works as a producer. She’s eager for young Latinos to see themselves represented on television and to let them know that careers are available to them at all levels of the television industry. To this end, she’s involved in mentoring efforts at CNN, particularly with interns. She strongly believes in encouraging young people, especially young women, to pursue their dream jobs regardless of the obstacles they may face.
Just last year, Serrano Quintero fulfilled a lifelong dream when she won a Peabody Award, a coveted prize in the media industry. Moving forward, she plans to continue being a champion for women and the Latino community in everything she does—for now, that means she’ll keep telling people’s stories.
