This week, NextGen to Watch is spotlighting García, a Peruana Australiana (Peruvian Australian) who runs her own business, García Entertainment. There, she is a consultant for Latin music in Australia. Her business focus? To grow Latin music in Australia and other English-speaking markets. How? By partnering with major entertainment and touring companies to bring fans their favorite Latin artists.
She is also a member of the ARIA Awards voting academy and a committee member of Women in Music Australia.
Who inspired you the most in your life growing up?
That’s a tie between mis padres. Their hunger for education mixed with their passionate, enthusiastic personalities always encouraged me to keep learning, keep trying, and to take pride in all the work that I do—big or small. Plus, music is in our blood; my great grandfather helped write “Vals del Cucuneo” sung by Óscar Avilés.
Whose career really inspires you?
Vyvienne Abla of Vyva Entertainment. She has been building her career for nearly twenty years, working on some incredible projects with incredible people. She has proven that it is possible to stand by your morals and ethics and still have a thriving creative career.
What is part of your daily routine that you look forward to every day?
I meditate daily. A great way to get myself hyped up again is to softly play “La Vida Es Un Carnaval” by Celia Cruz, followed by blasting “OJOS FERRARI” by KAROL G, Justin Quiles, and Angel Dior.
When you get a new idea, what’s the first thing you do with it?
I often get my best ideas while I drive. So, if something sparks, I’ll call up my partner or best friend and ask them to text me every word that comes to my mind in that moment. That way I can pick up where I left off later.
What behavior or personality traits do you attribute to your success?
Vision, resilience and, above all else, mindfulness.
In this business, I have been talked down to, had professionals yell and swear at me while under the influence, been used then ghosted, and much more. But I have a vision y le voy a echar ganas.
In these spaces, hustle culture is alive and well, so I try to stay mindful of:
- The people I surround myself with.
- My mental health and if I’m prioritizing what matters most to me, which is family.
- How my words and actions will impact others. How can I be better tomorrow?
What is one non-work-related goal that you would like to achieve in the next five years?
I would love to learn how to cook all the Peruvian recipes from my mamita by heart. I want to be able to cook her carapulcra with my eyes closed.
What’s one thing we’d never be able to guess from your LinkedIn profile?
I have social anxiety. Growing up, I got really good at masking and appearing outgoing and confident. Now, I’m doing the work to unlearn my masking so I can find a middle ground where I can be myself in social situations without compromising my mental health.
Your theme song
For years now, hands down, “How I Do It” by Snow Tha Product.
