Hugo Rojo helps lead communications for the correspondents and reporting coming from CBS News’ Washington, DC, bureau, as well as leading strategic publicity for the number one award-winning Sunday morning affairs program Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.
When it comes to career highlights, Rojo says helping promote CBS’s election coverage, including the CBS-hosted presidential debate in Charleston, South Carolina, was a surreal and rewarding experience.
“When I look back at my journey to and in Washington, DC, I feel a deep sense of humility and accomplishment,” he says. “I never imagined I’d be working in our nation’s capital helping tell the story behind some of this country’s most iconic news organizations. That’s an accomplishment and milestone I don’t take lightly.”
As a young Latino in the space, Rojo has had to deal with his fair share of imposter syndrome.
“I hadn’t met many other communicators that had a similar background to me or looked like me,” Rojo says. “It was hard to visualize a future for me in the industry when I didn’t have that many mentors or role models to look up to. It took time and being intentional in building connections and asking people for coffee to build my support network of professionals in communications. If you can see it, you can be it. It all starts with an email or a phone call.”
As a news junkie himself, Rojo suggests following Millie Tran on Twitter, as well as the Morning Brew suite of newsletters. He also listens to NPR’s Up First podcast first thing every morning.
