NextGen Collective recently spotlighted MPM Partners Cofounder Luis Arellano. Read about where he wants to go in his career, who inspired him the most growing up, and more.
Where are you from?
I was born in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico and grew up in Nogales, Arizona. I currently live in Los Angeles.
What do you do today and where do you want to go in your career?
I founded a couple of businesses where I combine entertainment and technology. At MPM Partners, I represent and develop artists in hip hop, R&B, and Latin music, I head our company’s Latin label in partnership with Universal Music Latino, and I produce film and TV projects such as our movie, After the Reign.
At our new venture, Neefter, my cofounder, Felipe Servin, and I partner with top brands to introduce them to the importance of Web3 by launching their NFT projects seamlessly, reducing a lot of the costs and complexities through our own technology that doesn’t require any coding experience.
Who inspired you the most in your life growing up?
That’s easy, my father. He is the hardest worker I know.
What are some of the biggest challenges you see for Latinx professionals early in their careers?
One of the biggest challenges for our Latinx communities in general is genuine support from our own Latinx communities; being united and really leveraging our purchasing power and culture to our advantage.
How can Latinx professionals better advocate for themselves?
By not being afraid to speak up and going for what they want!
What are you most excited for in 2022?
To continue creating and be happy!
When you get a new idea, what’s the first thing you do with it?
Write it down!
What behavior or personality traits do you attribute to your success?
I’m a very creative and passionate person. Sometimes they can be counterproductive, especially when you have too much of something and it sends you in the wrong direction, but on the other hand, if you’re not passionate about what you are doing, then you don’t really believe in it, thus can’t be all in, which is really important in the industries that I work in. In addition, the ability to partner and work with the right people to form powerful teams is incredibly important.
What’s been the biggest surprise or highlight of your career to date?
There are too many surprises and highlights for me: producing a movie that is currently on Amazon Prime, developing artists and helping create music that has over a billion streams, achieving multiple certified platinum and gold records, partnering with Universal Music Latino and Epic Records with our artists, launching some of the most successful Latinx NFT collections to date with iconic brands, and working with the people that I work with everyday to name a few.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
That it doesn’t feel like a job to me!
