This week, NextGen to Watch is spotlighting Jorge Perez, a student advocate for first generation Latinos at Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. He’s also studying higher education administration at Northeastern Illinois University to get his master’s, while hosting a seasonal podcast, College & Beyond.
Perez was born and raised for the early part of his childhood in Villa Nueva, Guatemala, before he moved to the US, growing up in Round Lake, Illinois. Today, he is devoted to fostering a more inclusive and equitable future for Latino professionals.
Who inspired you the most in your life growing up?
I would say my grandma is my biggest inspiration. At seventy-two years old, she is still a hard-working person, determined, and smart. She didn’t go to school at all, but she loves to learn. I feel I have carried her tendencies over with me in life and in my career.
What are some of the biggest challenges you see for Latino professionals early in their careers?
Many Latino professionals may not speak English as their first language, which can make it difficult to communicate effectively in the workplace or understand certain company policies. Unfortunately, Latino professionals may still encounter cultural biases and stereotypes, which can impact their ability to advance in their careers or feel included in the workplace. Historically, there have been fewer Latino professionals in leadership positions, which can make it harder for younger professionals to see themselves represented in their desired roles.
How can Latino professionals better advocate for themselves?
You must work on your personal brand. Networking is key, because it allows you to gain information, create possible job opportunities, and foster connections to see what you bring to the table.
What podcast or lifehack can you not live without?
I love listening to Ghost Stories Online podcast just because I’m into the paranormal. But, I recently got introduced to Adam Grant’s podcasts ReThinking and Work Life. I really enjoy his conversations about really interesting things.
What behavior or personality traits do you attribute to your success?
I recently had a conversation with a colleague, and she told me I bring forth a relaxed vibe. She said that I’m easy to talk to, and I’m always smiling or showing a positive attitude. So, if you think people don’t notice when you walk through the door with an angry face or chin down, they do. Remember to control the things you can control and don’t stress about the things you can’t.
What is one non-work-related goal that you would like to achieve in the next five years?
One goal that I would like to conquer within the next year is to learn how to play acoustic guitar. I love music, and I cannot sing for anything. But, if I can play guitar, I think that would be a win.
What’s one thing we’d never be able to guess from your LinkedIn profile?
Oh, that’s easy. It would be that I played soccer for over fourteen years and got the opportunity to try out for the Chicago Fire soccer team. I tore my ACL in 2014, so I stopped playing for a while. I’m looking to go back to play just for fun.
What is your theme song for any occasion?
“Long Cool Woman” by The Hollies, “Your Love” by The Outfield, and “Living on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi.
