NextGen Collective spotlights Goodman Media International Assistant Account Executive Sarah McAllister (she/her/hers). Read on about what pride means to her, her advice for those who want to be an ally to the LGBTQIA+ comunidad, and more.
What does “pride” mean to you?
To me, pride encompasses authenticity, compassion, and gratitude. It represents strength and resilience, and the power of community in the face of adversity. Pride means living my truth and holding space for those in our community who have fought for the rights we have today. Pride means making the world a more loving, accepting place.
How do you celebrate Pride?
I celebrate pride by embracing and celebrating my identity and cherishing my capacity for love, regardless of gender. Visibility matters, and I want to continue to use my voice and unique perspective to help others feel more seen and understood.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community but doesn’t know where to start?
Create space for others to show up as their authentic selves. Support LGBTQIA+ businesses and media, and research issues impacting our community to effectively advocate as an ally.
Are there any books, movies, shows, or podcasts on LGBTQ+ issues that you would recommend?
I recommend The L Word and But I’m a Cheerleader – both “campy” classics created by queer women. There is an immense need for more LGBTQ+ content that does not objectify members of our community.
