30 Under 30: Luzelly Frias

Luzelly Frias is a clinical social worker, psychotherapist, and owner of Innergy Counseling, a psychotherapy practice that offers a safe space for Black, Indigenous, and people of color seeking support and guidance through counseling and clinical supervision for associate therapists. Frias also provides consulting to organizations surrounding wellness, self-care, and mental health.

The mental health professional’s proudest moment in her young career is taking the leap of faith to start her own business—despite the concerns and fears of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In alignment with her work, Frias is passionate about bringing accessible mental healthcare to all communities, especially those that have been historically marginalized. Frias is also interested in immigration policy, social justice, reproductive health care, and housing accessibility.

The Afro-Latina’s parents both immigrated from the Dominican Republic, and she continues to celebrate her heritage through food, language, and visiting new parts of the island when she can.

Frias says that disadvantages are a regular occurrence for first-generation Americans. “I quickly noticed that I was at a disadvantage as a first-gen graduate student, as a new social worker, and then as an entrepreneur. Creating the community I needed, especially within new spaces, encouraged growth in my networking skills.”
