30 Under 30: Carla Echeveste

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

If you do even a little digging into Carla Echeveste’s life and career, one phrase will come to mind: “homegrown heroine.” Echeveste has made an incredible impact on her community in Milwaukee, and she’s far from finished.

A graduate of the local Alverno College, where she wrapped up her college career by nabbing the school’s coveted Rising Star award, Echeveste is proof that you can accomplish great things right where you are. Today, she works for the Medical College of Wisconsin’s All of Us research program, which seeks to accelerate medical advancement by establishing a database of genetic information. Echeveste helps with program outreach, acts as a liaison between the program and its Hispanic community partners, publishes scientific articles under the guidance of Dr. Li-Shu Wang, and serves on the board of directors for the Milwaukee Area Health Education Center. In future, she hopes to attend medical school and create a scholarship for Latinas interested in pursuing careers in medicine and research.
