Nikki Adame-Winningham can be your knight in shining armor, even if she’s a natural introvert. The climate and sustainability lead counsel at Pfizer says some might be surprised to find that a majority of the lawyers she works with at one of the most famous pharmaceutical companies in the world are natural introverts. But that doesn’t preclude them from doing what they do best.
“You get used to the lawyer jokes in-house,” says Adame-Winningham, who last spoke with Hispanic Executive in 2021. “They can be funny and even cute, but I think it’s important for our clients to remember that we are here for you, to be your sword and your shield. We’re your protection.”
Adame-Winningham speaks of swords and shields in a tone so gentle that it’s hard to imagine her charging into any kind of battle. But that is the point. It’s not just the extrovert and glad-hander who make effective in-house counsel. A company like Pfizer surely has its pick of any high-caliber litter, and it has chosen a good number of lawyers who tend to be at their best in smaller groups and person-to-person.

You might not guess this about Adame-Winningham if you just checked LinkedIn. The attorney jokes that she is a joiner, and it’s true. She was a Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) fellow, is an active Director on the Board of the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL), recently joined the President’s Council of Cornell Women, and is also active in Pfizer’s Legal Division committees and workstreams.
And on the clock, she’s continuing to help chart a sustainable path for Pfizer’s future.
Building a Modern Sustainability Practice
Adame-Winningham’s remit now spans, in addition to foundational environment, health, and safety counseling, climate, sustainability, human rights, and related reporting, including advising on extended producer responsibility, modern slavery, and due diligence laws across multiple jurisdictions. Those regimes were originally designed to bring consistency to global markets, she notes, but local adaptation has complicated that goal.

Europe is both the engine and the proving ground for much of this work, because many of the newest sustainability and human rights expectations emerge first in the EU and then echo elsewhere. As EU rules are announced, tweaked, and occasionally rethought, individual governments choose their own pace and depth of implementation, creating a patchwork of timing and emphasis that Pfizer’s legal team must interpret for the business.
Meanwhile, countries like Mexico and Australia have taken what began as a single framework and reshaped it so thoroughly for their local needs that the resulting reports are anticipated to look markedly different from one another. That fragmentation puts Adame-Winningham at the center of reconciling competing legal demands while still pushing, where she can, for greater harmonization.
At the same time, she’s helping the company implement its Net-Zero strategy, including negotiating virtual power purchase agreements that enable the development of new renewable energy projects and working with Pfizer’s procurement team to encourage suppliers to reduce their carbon footprints. Here again, she leans on external standards bodies like the Science Based Targets initiative to help define what is credible, what is not, and how to deploy emerging tools responsibly.

For Adame-Winningham, this work is both technical and conceptual. It requires fluency in global reporting standards, a steady hand in interpreting evolving regulations, and the ability to translate all of it into clear, pragmatic guidance for colleagues across manufacturing, research and development, and corporate functions.
Through all this change, Adame-Winningham keeps returning to Pfizer’s core values: courage, excellence, equity, and joy. Those values, she says, have remained steady even as the vocabulary of sustainability has shifted and the company itself has streamlined after the intense pandemic years.
Staying True
Adame-Winningham is an individual contributor, driving progress on sustainability and leading through her influence on multidisciplinary teams. At some point, people leadership may be part of her job description, but Adame-Winningham isn’t interested in pursuing a title for title’s sake. The attorney sees growth embedded in the substance of her work.
“The nature of my work has growth built into it,” Adame-Winningham explains. “It’s very different from what I did when I started my career. And so much is changing about how we do what we do and how we can be most effective. I love that challenge. This time of history is so full of change, and I consider it a privilege to be able to help this organization be a good steward of its resources.”

Professional success might look different to Adame-Winningham, but one cannot deny the fulfillment in her voice. She engages in deep and challenging work in climate and sustainability at a company whose mission she believes in. She is surrounded by a tight-knit legal team. She can make a difference through organizations like LCLD, NAWL, Hispanic National Bar Association, and Cornell. And, off hours, she has good food and “bad” TV to keep her grounded.
Not every changemaker is a people leader. Not every problem is a nail that needs a hammer. And sometimes, the most courageous knight is often not the loudest one in the room.
